The Sisters of Our Lady of the Retreat at
the Cenacle was originally co-founded by St. Therese Couderc in France
in 1826.
In 1955, Bishop Wendelin Nold invited the Cenacle Sisters into the
Diocese of Galveston-Houston to establish a retreat house which at
that time was designated to serve the spiritual needs of women.
Currently,
the Cenacle Retreat House is nestled on lush grounds along the bayou
in the wooded Memorial area where it moved from Rosharon
in 1967. Now serving both women and men, the Cenacle’s spiritual
ministry invites people of all faiths to an awakening and deepening
of their experience of a loving and compassionate God.
The Cenacle is
100% funded by donations. We are not supported by the Archdiocese or
any religious institution; and, we receive no fees for
our services – only gifts based on each person’s ability
to give.
The world is full of good people who are
searching for meaning in the midst of a chaotic and frenetic environment
oriented toward
the material
successes of the outer world. This search for meaning is ever increasing
as more and more people find that materialism has left them unsatisfied;
they are turning to spirituality – their inner world – to
find the answers. The nearby Cenacle provides a sacred, peaceful oasis
where one may escape this chaos and open one’s heart to develop
a greater awareness of a loving God.
